Brake Pads

Hello. I own a 2000 Mercedes ML 430 SUV and was told the brake pads and rotors were recently replaced. After purchase i checked the pads myself and they were indeed all brand new. After driving for a few days the brake pads were squeeling. Now i know what standard worn brake pad squeel sounds like and this was not it. More like complete metal on metal. The pads are held in place by two steel pins through the calipers and pads. There is a metal clip which i assumes holds the pads tightly in position. The squeeling happens very much at intermittent times. First thing in the morning when backing out of the driveway, middle of the day, but always when getting under 10km/h in the braking procedure. My questions are these. How quickly can rotors rust, because mine are already teribble except where the pad is hitting. How much of the rotor should the pad cover? And what can be the problem that makes them squeel so badly? Thank you

You've answered the question in the question, the rotors were probarbly not turned when the pads were replaced, why spend the extra money if your going to get rid of the car? then youve got the other question of why buy the best pads? im selling the car.., there you have it, why buy the good pads if your selling the car? and even if you replace the rotors ( because you may have to ) why buy the best? do the pricing yourself! they offer only one set of pads for that car that gaurentee no squeeking and no brakedust, you dont have them, sorry

Unfortunately that does not fully answer my question. Yes i know there are different types of pads and they are most likely not the best you can buy. But why do the front not squeel at all, the back are terrible, and the rotors covered in rust already? I sanded off the top layer of pad to make sure it is not because they need to be worn in, and why is it at intermittent times. Would anti-squeel fix this?

Answer 3/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

The rotors were new at the time of purchase.

Answer 4/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Anti sqeel will fix this quickly, sorry only meant that the pads seemed to be not of high quality, which in turn would mean sqeeling is in the making, but i believe your in correct and in the knowhow

Answer 5/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Thank you. How much of the rotor should the pad cover? And do you know of any good anti-squeel compound?

Answer 6/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

It should cover 85 to 90 % of the rotor equelly top and bottom, thermo quiet is the pad i trust for my truck ( pulling boat and camper ) and my wifes cadi ( or i sleep alone AND wash wheels ) and as far as the compound sir i only use the grey stuff thats free at the auto parts store, sorry but it is free and isnt a have o with the pads i use, the compounds will not come in different choices, maybe 2 if your lucky

Answer 7/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Well that scares me quite badly. My pads only cover about 50% of the rotor. Hmmm, i wonder is the pads are completely wrong. This vehicle may be going to hell rather quickly.

Answer 8/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Oooooo.... sorry but you should only see about 10 % of the rotor that doesnt hit he pad on top and 10 % of the pad on the bottom that doesnt hit, do you think either the pad or rotor is incorrect? sounds like a good possability to me.

Answer 9/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

What are you meaning on top and on bottom. Pads are mounted vertically from the side of the rotor.
-----0 the 0 being the rotor.

Answer 10/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

I guess the better question would be how much coverage towards the centre of the rotor should they cover. The space from the edge of the rotor to the centre, mine only cover about 50%

Answer 11/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Should be 80 % 10% not covered top, 10% not covered bottom

Answer 12/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Hmm, so i would bet money that the pads are too small., and thats why i am seeing rust on the rotor so badly, since there is no pad there to clean it off. Since the pad is formed with a curved edge i would believe the curve should fit almost snug against the curved, jetted out part of the rotor. Mine does not even come close.

Answer 13/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

I would definetely think so without a doubt, if you were to go to the auto parts store and they ask you which ones you have, you'll know theres 2 different ones.. same way with the rotors

Answer 14/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Not to sound like a moron, but your meaning the front and rear. Correct?

Answer 15/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Same wear on both correct, rear can be less, no more

Answer 16/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Excellent. So the guy bought and installed the wrong pads (most likely) and possibly even the rotors. I better get a hold of him and get some numbers to check with Mercedes to see if any of it is right.
So what would you recommend for a type of pad to be there best? Semi-metallic or organic or something else? Sorry if i'm bugging you so much but you're definately on a roll

Answer 17/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Not bugging at all! do one thing and please get back to me.. please.. its a posability i could be wrong on this.i have a jetta ( european ) i drive now, if the specs are different and they dont cover the mass and or the majority of the pad PLEASE let me know! i pass on years of experiance ( even though i cant spell it ) and want to be as accurate as i can with the next individual, thank you!

Answer 18/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Definitely can do that. I would love to know as well because every single rotor i see there is NO rust. The surface area is nice and shiney.
Any suggestion on the type of pad though if i need new ones?

Answer 19/21 - Submitted 10/19/2010

Dfinetely i say THERMO QUIET ! i can stand behind the no dust and no squeek since they've been out, i dont like custemers complaints or my wifes griping OR washing wheels!
