Question

Asked 10/20/2010

I need to change the front end brake pads on my 98 Chevy Lumina. What is the easiest way to do this?

I have never changed brakes before. I don't know anything about cars. But I have no one who can/will change them for me, and I don't have enough money to get them professionally done. I don't know what tools I will need or how to change them. Any information will help. Thanks for your time.

For tools you will need a jack, lug wrench, and a socket set. jack up one side of the car ,remove the tire, next you want to find the caliper mounting bolts@ the top and bottom, remove the bolts they are to the rear side of the caliper at the top and bottom. once these are off talke a ccrewdriver and pry out on the caliper once is is off the rotor the pads will come out, remember there is an inboard and outboard pad, lokk at them before you take them out to get a pic in your mind how they go back in. take a c-clamp and place it on the caliper abd the other end goes on the inside of the iston and compress the piston all the way in , this will keep you from having to bleed the brakes. once the pads are in set it back over the rotor and remount. then go to the other side.
