High pitched screetching, like nails down a chalk board, when you let up on them. Or a grating sound when you compress them to stop. Or they don't work as instantly as they were before. Break pads are pretty easy to change. I've done them myself before, without having done them before. I just got a hanes manual for my car. It's best to have someone help you, only because it will go a lot faster and it's nice to have help getting the car jacked up right. It's also cheaper to replace them yourself. Just go to auto zone, and they will point you in the right direction.
